Baby Slings Are Good for Babies and Mommies, Fe Nogra-Abog
Confused about which baby sling is best for you and your baby? Read on for an overview of the 3 most popular types of cloth baby carriers.

Baby wearing, keeping baby close to the mother for most of the day through the use of a baby carrier, is considered to be a healthy practice. Compared to babies who are left in cribs, strollers or infant seats, babies who are worn tend to stay calmer, cry and fuss less, and receive better stimulation.

Baby wearing is also good for Moms. It helps them do chores and go on errands while baby contentedly naps or rides and looks around. Many Moms even make baby slings one of their fashion accessories!

Baby wearing has become so popular that dozens of baby slings and other carriers are being marketed today. The choices can be confusing, especially for first-time parents. Below is a brief guide on the three basic types of cloth baby carriers available: baby ring sling; baby pouch; and, baby wrap carrier.

Baby Ring Sling

This is a length of cloth that the user threads through rings to create a pouch for baby. Some have padding on the shoulder and rails of the sling for Mom's and baby's comfort. Some have a pocket for carrying keys or an extra diaper.

Pros:

  • easy to adjust; one size can be shared by several adults
  • can be used for many positions

Cons:

  • learning how to use it may take time
  • need to loosen the pouch to take baby in or out

Baby Pouch

This is a tube of fabric worn across the body. Baby is placed inside the pouch. Most are not adjustable, although a few styles use velcro, buttons or snaps so that the pouch can accommodate more sizes of adult carriers. A pouch may also be padded along the rails and have a pocket for small essentials.

Pros:

  • easy to put on and take off
  • easy to pop baby in or out
  • folds small

Cons:

  • usually not adjustable; you have to try it on with baby to find the perfect size
  • can be used for fewer positions than a ring sling, especially when baby grows bigger

Baby Wrap Carrier

This is long and stretchy length of fabric that the carrier wraps around baby and her own body.

Pros:

  • probably the most comfortable because baby's weight is distributed across both shoulders
  • gives the most stable support for newborns
  • can be used for many carrying positions

Cons:

  • most difficult to learn how to use
  • takes the longest time to put on and take off
  • another adult should be present when carrying baby at the back, unless the carrier has become very experienced at using the wrap
  • can get hot; lots of fabric is involved

This overview gave you an idea of which carrier will probably work for you. However, the best way to decide is to try them out. Borrow from friends to determine which one is most comfortable and easiest for you to use. Many babywearing Moms own several baby slings, using a different type for different situations and uses.

Baby wearing is good for baby and convenient for Mommy, but the choices in baby slings can be confusing. The most common choices of cloth baby carriers are a ring sling, pouch or wrap. You'll be sure to find one or several that will best suit your babywearing style and needs.
