Baby colic can be disheartening to new parents. When fussiness and crying become too frequent, try these helpful techniques and remedies to calm baby.

A colicky baby can overwhelm an otherwise peaceful family. Images of serene bonding with a new infant will fade with the incessant screaming and crying that is the hallmark of colic. When parents find it hard to get more than two hours of sleep at a time and feel their patience draining away, there may be many tools and techniques still at their disposal. Try these tips and remedies to help soothe a fussy baby.

Pacifier Use

Some babies enjoy pacifiers (sometimes called binkies), finding the sucking motion soothing. Although it is a habit that will require breaking later, for now if it works to calm the baby down, consider purchasing a collection of them.

Soothing Motion

Try rocking the baby with colic at different angles and speeds. When you need to take a break, place the baby in an automatic or wind-up swing. These devices are wonderful and colicky babies will often fall asleep in them as long as the motion continues unabated. Other ways to provide soothing vibration, swinging, and motion are:

  • Walking baby in stroller
  • Using snugli sack or sling to keep baby close
  • Taking baby for a car ride
  • Placing baby seat securely on washer or dryer
  • Placing baby in a vibrating our bouncing chair
  • Massaging infant or enrolling in a baby massage class

Regular Sleep

Don't give up on naps and regular sleep for the baby. Every day, make an attempt to put the baby down for a rest at least two or three times. At first, the infant will dictate the times she is tired, but with persistence a parent will be able to slowly nudge the infant to sleep at regular intervals. If she is resistant at first, let her cry for a few short moments, visiting her periodically. The baby will eventually learn that she needs to sleep at these times.

Swaddling

Wrap the infant's body (below the head and neck) tightly in a soft blanket so that her arms and legs are secure will provide comfort and security for a colicky baby. Sometimes a baby may be cold and needs the added warmth of swaddling.

Excessive Gas Treatment

After feeding her, make sure to burp her carefully so that she does not develop gas pains and cramping that can exacerbate colic. If she seems to be pulling up her legs or arching a lot, lay baby on her belly for short spells to help with passing gas. Parent may also want to try using gas drops after meals, but consult the pediatrician before administering any medication to an infant.

Music and Repetitive Sound

At night or at any other time fussy baby is trying to nap, play natural sounds recordings in her bedroom to help her fall asleep. Steady noise seems to help some children block out other audio disturbances that might be causing the colic. Ocean waves, rain, gentle wind, and even white noise can all have a positive effect and help a colicky infant fall asleep.

Many babies enjoy music. Play gentle classical songs or simple children’s tunes and dance with a crying infant. Making movements that are gentle but a little unpredictable will help the baby stay interested, while at the same time providing a good amount of exercise for the parent.

Scenery Changes

Babies get bored sitting or lying in the same position for long periods of time. Try giving a colicky infant a change of scenery by moving her to a different room, going outside on a nice day, or taking a quick trip to the mall. Another great idea can be to provide the baby with a warm bath. Water can soothe a distressed child and provide a welcome distraction.

Handling baby colic will be an exhausting phase for parents, but luckily it usually subsides within a year or less. In order to stay energetic, creative, and positive, tired parents will need to find time to recharge by occasionally employing a trusted babysitter or family member so they can get some rest, go to the store, or enjoy a book and a bath. Baby will sense when her primary caregivers are rested and happier.
