A step-by-step guide to the art of baby massage.

It is amazing that something as simple as human touch can make a baby thrive. Just being held strengthens the bond between parent and child. How much more beneficial, then, must massage be to your baby and the relationship you have with her? Recent studies have also shown that baby massage may help the immune system, stimulate growth, encourage better sleep habits, and reduce stress. If you would like to give it a try, here are a few simple steps to get you started.

  1. Prepare the Area

Choose a spot that is relatively warm and free from drafts. Lay out a soft blanket or towel for baby to lie on. If you want, you can use dim lighting and slow soft music to make the environment even more relaxing.

  2. Prepare the Baby

An ideal time for massage is immediately following baby's bath time. If baby has not just emerged from the bath, you will have to undress him. Again, be sure that the room is warm enough. Try talking or singing to your baby to help him relax.

  3. Before You Begin

It is a good idea to use a baby-safe lotion or oil during the massage and use gentle, circular motions. Continue singing or talking to baby and maintain constant eye contact to maximize the bonding between you and your child.

  4. Head and Face

Begin by softly massaging across baby's forehead and down to his temples with the tips of your fingers. Move down to his cheeks, along the jawline, and onto his chin.

  5. Shoulders and Arms

Gently grasp baby by his upper arms and use your thumbs to massage his shoulders. Work your way down his arms, but be careful near his elbows - this is a sensitive area! Continue down his arms and onto his hands, paying particular attention to his palms.

  6. Chest and Tummy

Using the tips of your fingers, start at the top of baby's chest and make circular motions from side to side, working your way down to his tummy. Some babies have ticklish stomachs so if your baby seems uncomfortable, discontinue this portion of the massage.

  7. Legs and Feet

Wrap your fingers around baby's legs and using your thumb, massage downward from thighs to ankles. Gently rub the soles and heels of baby's feet with your thumbs.

  8. Back

Carefully roll baby onto his tummy. Begin at his shoulders and massage downward with the tips of your fingers. This should be especially gentle as you do not want baby to feel as though he is being pushed down.

The most important thing to remember is that your baby will let you know what he likes and what he doesn't. Pay close attention to his cues - the massage should be an enjoyable experience for both you and your baby.
