Debating between cloth vs. disposable diapers? Pocket diapers are a convenient, easy and environmentally friendly choice for parents.

Pocket cloth diapers are one of the modern improvements to old-fashioned cloth baby diapers. The first cloth pocket diapers were Fuzzi Bunz, created in 1999 by Tereson Dupuy.

Pocket diapers may appeal to parents who:

  • Use a variety of caregivers.
  • Have a moderate amount to spend on cloth baby diapers.
  • Have both light and heavy wetters.
  • Want to customize for a baby who wets to the front or back.
  • Are willing to assemble diapers before using.
  • Need a quick drying option.
  • Prefer convenience at changing station over ease of sorting laundry.

What is a Pocket Cloth Diaper?

A pocket cloth diaper has a polyurethane laminate (PUL) outer and usually a microfleece inner. The back seam of the diaper has an open space add inserts to provide absorbency. Once the pockets are stuffed, they are ready to use and are similar in look and use to disposables. Pockets either close with hook and loop or snaps.

The Cost of Cloth Pocket Diapers

New cloth pocket diapers generally run from $15-18, which is less expensive than all-in-ones. Used pockets can be purchased for less on sites such as eBay, Diaper Pin, Diaper Swappers and others. Inserts for these cloth diapers are often sold by the same company that makes the pockets; however, there are many stuffing options.

Customize Absorbency with Inserts

When stuffing a cloth pocket diaper, the most important thing to consider is how much absorbency is necessary for the child. Brands such as Happy Heinys offer customized inserts. Happy Heinys inserts can accommodate an additional oval insert to add absorbency where it is needed most. Customized inserts can be used to stuff pockets, in addition to prefold diapers, doublers or microfiber towels. Microfiber towels offer a trim option to add absorbency without a high cost. They can be purchased at warehouse stores, automotive stores, superstores and cloth diapering websites. It is necessary to stuff the pocket before it can be used.

Advantages of Cloth Pocket Diapers

Pockets allow parents to customize absorbency for the child where all-in-ones (AIOs) do not. While other cloth diapering options involve many different layers or covers, stuffed pockets are a grab-and-use solution. However, unlike all-in-ones, the stuffing is removed prior to washing. This helps speed dry the diaper and allow for different handling for the more sensitive outer and less sensitive stuffing materials. Pockets work great with cloth baby wipes, which can save a lot of money.

Pocket Cloth Diapers are Friendly to Strangers

Pockets also offer another benefit when they are assembled: They look very similar to disposables. While cloth diapering parents may not find this necessary, other caregivers may find themselves more comfortable with a diaper that simply goes on the baby and is fastened. Those who don’t cloth diaper on a daily basis may find it hard to use a system that might includes a fitted, a doubler and a cover.

Fuzzi Bunz and Happy Heinys Are Popular Brands

There are many popular brands of pockets. Fuzzi Bunz are available in many colors and have snap closures. Happy Heinys and bumGenius use hook and loop closure. These brands also offer one-size cloth diapers. There are pockets made by other companies and work-at-home moms (WAHMs) as well. Sites such as Diaper Pin offer reviews by customers who have used these products and can be helpful when first starting.

Pocket cloth diapers can be a perfect compromise between cost, ease of use and functionality. They can help resistant caregivers become accustomed to using cloth baby diapers and come in many different brands, sizes and colors. Pockets that are cared for properly can retain their value and be resold when they are no longer needed.
