Tips for Dining out with a ToddlerHow to Enjoy Restaurant Dining with Toddler-Aged Children
Going out to lunch or dinner with a toddler can be a challenge; here are some tips on how to enjoy a restaurant meal with a toddler - without tantrums.
Having a child changes almost every aspect of life – including dining out. Dining out with a toddler can be a challenging endeavor (especially the first time) but it shouldn't keep you from going out. By planning ahead and being prepared, you and your toddler can enjoy eating out at a restaurant. Choose the Restaurant Wisely When Dining with a Toddler One of the first steps to take is to find out if children are appropriate for the restaurant. Call ahead and ask the manager or maitre d' if the restaurant is appropriate for young ones. Timing is Everything when Eating Out with a Toddler If you can, time the trip at a time that is best for your children. For young babies, this could be during nap time. For toddlers, choose a time when your child is generally calm and happy – such as after a nap. Don't go to a restaurant when he or she is very hungry – try to time it so that he or she will eat, but isn't so hungry that tantrums can occur. Also try to arrange the trip at an off time for the restaurant, such as late morning or early afternoon, or before dinner time. That way, the restaurant will be less full – meaning that not only will there be fewer fellow diners, but also the kitchen will most likely turn out your food faster. Prepare Your Toddler for the TripPlan ahead and pack any necessities you might need, including a bib or sippy cup, as well as anything to keep your child occupied at the restaurant. This could include a new toy, some crayons and drawing paper, or other activities. If your child is old enough to understand, talk to him or her before the trip and discuss your expectations. Explain what the restaurant experience will be like and how you expect him or her to behave. Consider doing a trial run at home first, with everyone on their best behavior and using good table manners. Order Kids' Meals FirstAs soon as you can, order kids' food – and ask for it to come out as soon as it is done. Ordering their food earlier means the food will come out sooner, keeping the kids occupied at the table. Take a Break from the Table to Calm Your Toddler If things start to go downhill with your child, take a break. A quick walk around the restaurant or the neighborhood can help kids to calm down and prevent a spectacle. If Your Toddler Gets Upset, Have the Meal Wrapped Sometimes a toddler can get too overexcited or upset while out, and may not be able to sit quietly. While it can be frustrating, sometimes the best thing to do is just remove him or her from the situation. If this happens, make a quick exit by calling for the check and getting your meal wrapped up. Dining out with a toddler can be challenging, but by preparing yourself and your child, the experience can be enjoyable for everyone. Related Article: How to Start Toddlers on Finger or Table Foods
