Basic Infant Care Items

Changing a diaper is an important part of infant care, but it does not require most of the diapering products that you see in the store.

There are only a few basic diapering supplies that are necessary to change a baby’s diaper. Many of the extras that you see in the baby aisle such as wipe warmers and baby powder are not necessary and are potentially harmful. As with all aspects of baby care, the more simple and natural you can do things, the better for your baby.

Diapers

Diapers, whether disposable or cloth, should be kept where they are easily accessible. Choose a diaper that fits your infant well in order to prevent irritating sensitive skin and prevent leaks from too loose of a fit.

Disposable diapers vary quite a bit between brands. If the diapers you are using are causing frequent leaks, consider changing brands to get a better fit. If you are using a diaper that worked well in the past but started leaking, your baby may be ready for a bigger size.

Cloth diapers have come a long way from the one’s your grandmother used. They are available in all-in-one (AIO) diapers that work the same as disposables minus the disposing and pocket diapers that allow you to fill a pocket with a thick or thin liner, depending on your baby’s needs.

Wipes

There are many options available for diaper wipes. Many stores carry brands made for babies with sensitive skin. Check the ingredient list carefully so you know what you are putting on your baby’s skin. If you are concerned about what is in conventional wipes or are looking for a more frugal solution, you can make your own baby wipes using a roll of paper towels and a simple recipe for homemade baby wipes. If you are already using cloth diapers, it is only one more step to use reusable baby wipes. You can often find organic cotton wipes that are gentle on your baby’s skin and it is easy to simply throw them in with your dirty diapers to be washed.

Diaper Pail

Once you change a diaper, you are going to need somewhere to put it. This can be as simple as a small trashcan near your changing table or an elaborate diaper disposal system. Many parents find it easy enough to simply take soiled diapers straight out to the trash but when life gets hectic you may need a diaper pail.

Diaper Rash Cream

Most babies do not need diaper rash cream at every changing. Cloth diapers generally do a good job of completely preventing diaper rashes but frequent diaper changes should do the same thing. If your baby does develop a diaper rash, be sure to let the area completely dry before replacing the diaper and use a gentle zinc oxide cream. There are some “creamy” versions of your favorite diaper creams but while these are easier to get off your fingers, they are not nearly as effective because they are simply diluted versions of the original.

Changing Table

It is important to have some place safe where you can change your baby’s diapers. This does not have to be an expensive changing table, although those are nice. Any secure spot with an easy to clean surface will work just fine. Keep a gentle cleansing solution nearby (but out of reach of the baby) so that you can do a quick wipe down after each diaper change.

Limiting your diapering supplies to the basics will help you keep your baby healthy and clean without wasting a lot of money on unnecessary baby care items. Changing a baby’s diaper is one of the most frequent tasks involved in infant care but it is can be an important part of bonding with your baby as well.
