Mommy and Me exercise groups and activities are great ways for new moms to get out of the house and begin an exercise routine while caring for their baby.

More hospitals and communities are beginning to offer classes a new mom and baby to take together. These include parenting classes, social groups, as well as Mommy and Me yoga classes for new moms to begin to get their strength and flexibility back after having the baby.

What Is a Mommy and Me Yoga Class?

A Mommy and Me yoga class is an exercise class designed for postpartum moms. New mothers are encouraged to begin the class at least 4–6 weeks postpartum, or once their doctor has cleared them to begin exercising again.

Mommy and Me yoga classes involve gentle stretches and core toning exercises that can be done while either the mother holds the baby, or while the baby lies on the mat beside her. Multiple fitness levels for the postpartum mother can be accommodated by subtly changing the yoga poses, and mothers are encouraged to take breaks to feed or care for fussy babies.

How Can New Mothers Benefit?

New mothers can derive multiple benefits from attending a Mommy and Me yoga class or any other Mommy and Me groups. It gives new mothers a chance to get out of the house each week, with a set time and destination. This can help get new mothers acclimated to going out and about with their baby, as well as planning for the outing. All Mommy and Me groups give new mothers a chance to meet and talk to other new moms who have babies of similar ages. Advice and stories can be exchanged, helping new moms to not feel as isolated.

Babies can also benefit from attending classes with other children around. Babies enjoy looking at faces, as well as at other babies and children; being in an environment filled with other children their age can help them begin the socialization process.

Tips for Successfully Utilizing a Mom and Baby Yoga Class

Be sure to bring a blanket for the baby to lie on, while on the mat. If the class is scheduled near or on the baby’s nap time, check with the instructor ahead of time to see if they will allow the use of a car seat or stroller in the class for the baby to nap in, if the baby is unwilling or unable to sleep on the mat.

If taking the class with an older baby who is beginning to become mobile, bringing cushions and toys to help keep the baby near mom and entertained can be helpful. Most of the yoga instructors have been teaching new mom and baby classes for some time, so feel free to bring up concerns, ask questions, or even ask if an instructor would be willing to hold the baby while mom positions herself in a new pose.

While it can be difficult to travel with a new baby, attempt to get to the class early to help acclimate the baby to the surroundings, or put the baby down for a nap before the class begins. Remember to wear clothing that can accommodate movement, and to bring an extra layer of clothing for the baby in case the room is too warm or too cold for their comfort.

Mommy and Me yoga classes can be found through local hospitals or local moms groups. The classes generally run for a set period of time, and may be offered multiple times a year. It’s never too late for a new mom to begin to get back into shape, so moms and babies of all postpartum dates and abilities are welcome at these classes. Signing up for a Mommy and Me yoga class can be one of the best decisions that a new mom can make.
