Review of three baby carriers on the market to help moms decide which is best to meet their needs.
When you have a new baby, one must-have device is the baby carrier that mom can strap baby into. Moms who have colicky babies swear by baby carriers, and yet which carrier is best for you? There are so many options on the market; here is a snapshot of three relatively inexpensive carriers available to moms today. Snugli Double Comfort Soft Carrier by EvenfloThis front carrier holds baby either facing mom or facing away from mom. The seatback supports baby's head and neck and changes position easily for either position. Straps hold baby securely and provide a place to hook a toy or pacifier. Carrier includes a front pouch, removable bib, and padded harness that straps carrier on mom similar to a backpack. Carrier is advertised for babies who weigh 7-23 pounds. Pros: Carrier provides excellent support for baby’s head and neck. Baby feels secure and happy. Excellent for babies who do not like to be swaddled, as their legs can kick freely. Uncomplicated set up and simple for mom to put on. Cons: Provides no lower back support for mom. Although baby sits comfortably in carrier, it is difficult to get baby’s legs down through the leg openings, and her bottom all the way down in the seat. Mei Tai Carrier by Parents of InventionCarrier ties onto mom with long straps to provide back support for mom and security for baby. Booklet provides tips and tricks to problem solve for the correct placement of baby in the carrier. Directions for five different carrying styles include: newborn front carry, newborn forward facing, toddler forward facing, toddler hip carry, and toddler back carry. Carrier is advertised for ages birth to 3 years. Pros: Long straps allow moms of various sizes to comfortably wear carrier. Placement of carrier straps and baby provide excellent lower back support. Simple tying method straps the carrier onto mom without buckles or adjustments. Cons: Provides very little head and neck support for baby, requiring mom to keep one hand on baby’s head when baby is too young to hold head up. Long straps make it complicated to put on. Jelly Bean Reversible Sling by MunchkinSling comes in two sizes for different sized moms. Sling folds inside itself and hangs across mom over one shoulder. Baby can be carried cradle style, front facing, tummy to tummy, on mom’s hip or on mom’s back. Holds baby securely and provides a discreet way for mom to breastfeed in public. Carrier is advertised for babies who weigh up to 35 pounds. Pros: Simple to put on mom and simple to put baby in. Holds baby securely and provides a comfortable hands free method of carrying baby. Mom can breastfeed discreetly in public with baby in the cradle carry position. Sling provides excellent support for mom’s back and has padding for baby to lean against. Cons: Sling is not adjustable for another adult to carry baby in. No head/neck support for baby in sitting positions. When deciding on what baby carrier to purchase, moms must think about what they want to be able to do with baby in the carrier. These are only three of many carriers available on the market, and are all very different in their methods of carrying baby. When trying to decide on a carrier, wait until you can bring baby with you and see how both baby and mom feel, and how secure baby is in the carrier. What may be comfortable for one mom, may be uncomfortable for another mom.
