Innovative Products to Help Baby Sleep Safely and Snugly

Sleep sacks and swaddle blankets can be handy to use, since parents shouldn't use loose bedding or blankets if their baby is sleeping a crib.

New parents are overwhelmed by all the new baby products on the market. Previous generations had it simple with basic baby items. In addition to different colors and designs, there are lots of new products that may be confusing. From sleep sacks to swaddle blankets, here are a few of the latest products for infants to sleep in when in a crib.

Swaddle Blanket

Mothers have been swaddling their babies for centuries. It may be confusing to adults who are used to moving freely, but newborns like being wrapped up snugly. It mimics the small space in the womb where they spent their first nine months. Nowadays there are several products on the market that make swaddling a baby easy.

Kiddopotamous makes a blanket called the SwaddleMe. It is a one piece blanket with Velcro on two panels that wrap across the chest to keep the baby's arms snug against its body. The Velcro helps keep the baby in that position, and keeps the blanket from moving.

Several companies also make plain, flat blankets that are specifically meant for swaddling. They tend to be bigger and thicker than the standard receiving blanket. Some have special markings or folds or seams to help parents use them to swaddle their babies easily. One such product is the SwaddleDesigngs Ultimate Receiving Blanket. It is larger than usual, and actually has swaddling instructions sewn on.

Sleep Sack

Current guidelines say that babies and toddlers should not sleep with any blankets. So what is a parent to do when it's winter? Sleep sacks are a one piece "wearable blanket." They are usually snugger up top, but roomy at the bottom so baby can move about freely. They are made of thick fleecy fabrics for winter, and thinner cottons for warmer seasons. They are available in sleeveless and long-sleeved varieties.

Halo makes a popular line of sleep sacks. They are sleeveless, so in cold weather baby should wear something underneath with sleeves. Halo also makes some sleep sacks for newborns that have a Velcro-attached piece that swaddles the baby's arms to its chest. This piece can be taken off for babies who don't like being swaddled, and the sleep sack stands on its own.

Halo also makes a sleep sack for walking toddlers. The wearable blanket has leg holes so the child can pop her legs through to safely walk around. However, the blanket it still big, roomy, and cozy so the child stays warm when sleeping. In addition, there is a sleep sack available that even has an opening so that a child can wear it while being safely buckled into a carseat. The Halo sleep sacks have a zipper that zips from the bottom for easy diaper changes while baby stays asleep and warm.

Parents should be aware of unique new baby products, such as swaddling blankets with velcro and instructions, and sleep sacks that keep baby safe and warm. These allow parents to follow the current guidelines that baby not have loose bedding or blankets when sleeping alone in a crib.

we found a great sleep sack for transitioning our baby from the swaddle called a Peke Moe, hadn't seen anything like it, and was amazing how it worked immediately for our swaddle houdini.
