The list of the most popular baby names often varies a little from source to source, although all the favorite names always appear at least in the top 20 at some rank.

People go through their whole life with the name that was given to them by their parents. Although there are many other things that parents will do for their children, finding the right baby name for their offspring will indeed be an important decision.

Looking through lists of popular baby names can help parents with this crucial choice. Giving newborns popular baby names will also keep them within the trends when they are of school age. This will lessen the risk of being made fun of by other kids because of having an unusual name.

Following is a list of the 5 most popular names for both girls and boys appearing on the top baby names list at babycenter.com. The origin information has been attained from the Think Baby Names website.

Top Five Baby Girls’ Names

Ava: The origin of the name Ava is uncertain, but most likely it is German. Other sources could be from the Hebrew name Chava, which means serpent or life. In Latin Avis, a possible derivative, means bird. Ava could also be a variant of Eva in contemporary use.

Emma: This name is of Old French and Old German origin and it means universal. It was originally a short form of the German name Ermintrude. Also, in medieval England, Emma was a royal name. There are about 26 variants of Emma.

Olivia: Meaning olive tree, the origin of Olivia is Latin. It was coined by Shakespeare as the name to a character in his play the Twelfth Night. He may have used it as a derivative of the male name Oliver. In the Bible the olive tree is a sign of fruitfulness, dignity and beauty and today the offer of an olive branch signifies peace.

Isabella: A variant of Elizabeth, which is a Hebrew name, and Isabel of Spanish and Latin origin. The meaning of Isabella is God’s promise and God is my oath.

Madison: Also a boy’s name, it is of Old English origin and it means "son of the mighty warrior". It could also be a variant of the Hebrew names Madeline or Matthew and a derivative of Matilda an Old German name meaning mighty in battle.

Top Five Baby Boys’ Names

Ethan: A Hebrew name meaning "firmness, long-lived". In Biblical terms Ethan was a man of Israel noted for his wisdom. Ethan Allen, a furniture brand name, came from the American Patriot and Revolutionary War leader.

This way when the child is in company of other children he doesn’t run the risk of being made fun of for having a "strange" name. Popular baby names are also nice to pick because they are, after all, what everyone likes best. The name parents choose for their children will be one of the most important things they will give them.
