New mothers, hoping to place their fussy baby down to attend to other tasks, may find that a vibrating seat is the answer.

Baby seats that can soothe baby, as well as offer some stimulation are a great tool for any parent. A vibrating or bouncy seat is one such product that can help babies, and parents, get the comfort they need.

What is a Vibrating Bouncy Seat?

A vibrating bouncy seat, is a baby seat made of fabric stretched over a metal frame. The frame flexes at its base, and can be rocked or “bounced” by the baby’s movement, or by a parent or caregiver. A vibrating attachment to the seat offers a soothing feeling to the baby, much like that of a car ride. Frequently, bouncy seats will have a padded bar for toys to be hung from, allowing for both visual and physical stimulation, depending on the age of the infant.

Other options for a vibrating seat may include music, as well as detachable toys and textures. Different angles of recline are offered amongst the various seats, with some holding the baby in more of an upright position, while others will hold the baby nearly flat. The covers of the seats detach easily for washing, and the toy bars are often removable for ease of placing the infant in the seat.

Reasons for Using a Vibrating Seat

There are many reasons why parents may choose to use a vibrating seat for their infant. Fussy babies, or babies who seem calmed only by a car ride, may calm quickly when placed in the vibrating seat. Parents of babies with acid reflux may find it helpful to have a safe and comforting place to put their baby in a semi-upright position after feeding, while they attend to other tasks.

Babies who have difficulty napping or sleeping in the first months of life may find the bouncy seat to be a comforting place to slumber. Parents can rock, or bounce the seat to help a baby get to sleep while sleep patterns and habits are still developing.

Older infants, who are learning to reach and grab, may find that being able to sit semi-upright in a bouncy seat allows them both a view of the world around them, as well as toys within easy grasp.

Ways in Which a Vibrating Seat Aids in Infant Development

There are many ways in which utilizing a vibrating baby seat can help aid in infant development. Fussy babies who are not getting adequate rest, are unable to make important mental connections, and reach developmental milestones as quickly as babies who do get recommended amounts of sleep. Using a bouncy seat to help achieve slumber can help babies become well rested and better able to develop properly.

Older babies who are not yet mobile may find that they are able to rock the seat themselves by pushing their weight against it, learning cause and effect as they do so. At the same time, they are given a chance to view the world from an elevated position, and to practice fine motor control by grasping and pinching toys attached in reach above them.

Any baby seat should always be used under supervision, and the infant should never be left unattended while the seat is in use. Pay attention to weight limits, to help ensure that the baby does not become too large for the seat, making it unsafe for use.

When selecting a seat, be sure to take the baby’s temperament and needs into consideration. Babies with reflux, or who become fussy when lying flat, may benefit from a more upright model. Babies soothed by music may benefit from a model with a lullaby feature. Bouncy seats come in many different price points, starting at around $25 and going up to around $100. If possible, take the infant along to the store, and place them in the seats to try to find the best fit.

A vibrating bouncy seat is an excellent addition to any nursery, and when used properly, can offer much to both baby and parents.
