Deciding on a new baby’s name can be one of the most enjoyable tasks that expecting parents will have a chance to experience. In 2007, some of the most popular female baby names were rather classic, with some very unique twists – this according to a list of the most popular girls' baby names, issued by the United States Social Security Administration.

There’s an array of considerations expecting moms and dads should keep in mind when picking a baby name, from meaning and origin, to spelling and possible nicknames. Some parents favor biblical baby names, while others favor names based on more arbitrary factors, like the first letter or the name or the sound of the name’s last syllable or “just because.”

Baby Name Popularity

When naming a new baby girl, many parents feel that name popularity is an important factor to consider. Some expecting parents are seeking a popular, common girls' baby name that will be easy to remember, spell and pronounce, while other parents are seeking a girls' name that’s more unique and unusual. Other parents are just looking for a "cute" girls' name that fits their tastes.

In 2007, the most popular girls’ baby name was Emily – marking this traditional name’s twelfth consecutive year at the top. Other baby names in the top of the list for popularity in 2007 included Isabella, Emma, Ava, Madison, Sophia, Olivia, Abigail, Hannah, Elizabeth and Addison. Looking at the top ten baby names for girls in 2007, all of the names are relatively traditional and most carry a soft "a" sound.

Baby name trends change dramatically from year to year. And just because a particular baby name is in the top ten one year, doesn't mean that same name will be among the top baby names the following year.

Take the name "Brittany" for example; several years ago, this name was a top ten name for babies, but today, it doesn't make the top 50.

According to BabyNamesGarden.com, other recent "most popular" girls' names that are on the decline in terms of popularity include Jessica, Jennifer and Megan.

The same website also notes that a few girls' baby names are heading straight to the top of the list when it comes to popularity, including Isabella and Addison.

Expecting parents who are looking to learn more about unique girls' baby names from the United States, other countries and top names fitting certain themes (i.e. biblical names), can visit BabyNamesGarden.com for additional information on the most popular baby names, baby naming tips and more.
