Discovery Health has a new program called "The Baby Human". The first episodes cover subjects such as how your baby learns language, how they relate with others around them, and how they develop and build relationships. Various studies are shown that explain how babies learn the way that they do and the different developmental milestones that they go through.
This was so interesting to me, as a mother of young children and a daycare provider. I watched the "To Talk" episode and they explored the role of eye contact and learning language in infants. One study that they showed determined that babies could not learn new things and became easily frustrated without receiving all of the communication cues such as eye contact, facial expressions, and the tone of your voice.
I'm sure we've all had times that we were less than focused on our children. Our days get busy and hectic and it is easy to only give our children half of our attention. I'm guilty of doing too many things at once when my baby wants my attention. Sometimes I talk to my baby without really being present or making eye contact with my son. This program really made me think about the ways that I interact with my baby and how much young infants can really pick up.
