Waiting to Potty Train

Following your Toddlers Lead

Sometimes making the decision to postpone potty training is what is best for your toddler.

My oldest son began showing interested in the potty when he was only 15 months old. Being the proud new parent that I was I went out and bought not one but two child sized potties and took every opportunity to teach my son about the potty. I was sure he would potty train early. After several false starts, he was 3 1/2 by the time he was fully trained and both of us had experienced a lot more stress than we needed to.

My 18 month old has yet to even see a child sized potty. He watches his older brother use the potty and knows what happens in there. He tells us when he has gone to the bathroom but he is far too busy learning other skills to be very concerned about potty training. I have learned that it is much easier to wait until your child is really prepared to be potty trained before starting to train. As a daycare provider, I have seen children potty train in as little as two days or struggle with potty training for years. It really is true that they will potty train when they are ready. Some children need a little more encouragment to take the first step but they will all potty train much more quickly if potty training takes place when they are prepared for it.
